Happy Lunar New Year from the AVON team!

Jan 22, 2023
Happy Lunar New Year from the AVON team to you and your family!

Beginning on January 22nd, the Lunar New Year—also known as the Chinese New Year, Spring Festival, Tét and 설날 (Seollal)—is celebrated by millions of people around the world, including those in China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia.

It’s a fantastic time where many people return home to spend quality time with their family and friends. Celebrations are filled with fireworks, special food dishes, amazing parades and festivals.

There are many traditions related to this festive time, so here are some quick Do’s + Don’ts in preparation for celebrating the new Lunar Year.

  • Visit friends and family to exchange gifts like food, cookies, wine, fruit baskets and lucky money for the children.
  • Watch a traditional lion dance or firework show in your local Asian community (many may hold a celebration outdoors for you to just observe!).
  • Visit a Lunar New Year market and sample some of the amazing celebratory dishes being served.
  • Find a temple to light an incense and pray to your ancestors for a year of good luck.

  • Clean or sweep on the first day. You might just sweep out your good luck for the new year!
  • Wear black. Instead wear the color red for good wealth and prosperity. It’s encouraged to wear bright colors!
  • Swear, argue or shout. Remain peaceful to introduce a harmonic year ahead.
  • Wash your hair or get a haircut on New Year’s Day (before is fine!). Washing your hair is believed to “wash your fortune away,” and cutting your hair might “bring misfortune to uncles”.

Here are a few ways to wish people a very “Happy Lunar New Year!”
  • 恭喜发财 (Gong hei fat choy) – Cantonese / (Gong xi fa cai) – Mandarin
  • 받으십시오 (sae-hae bohk mahni ba-deu-sae-yo) – Korean
  • 明けましておめでとうございます (Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu) – Japanese
  • Chúc Mừng Năm Mới! – Vietnamese
