Avon Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Join Avon as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage month! We’ve highlighted valuable advice from a few of our Hispanic Avon Representatives for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Alba Tabares

Meet Alba Tabares of Duluth, Georgia, an Avon Representative who originally comes from Medellín, Colombia. Formerly a nurse in her home country and then in Rhode Island, Alba always knew she wanted to provide more for her family. After being approached three times about joining Avon, Alba finally seized the opportunity and began her career transition.

When she realized she was making more with Avon than her annual salary at her nursing job, she quit and made Avon her full-time job. “When I learned about the leadership role, I thought, this is something I want to do,” Alba said. “I saw how quickly I won a trip to the Bahamas thanks to Avon and I realized that this business could change my life. I never had these opportunities before. I knew I could make it with Avon.”

When we asked Alba for her tips on making the most of your Avon business, she enthusiastically replied, “Get your family involved!” After two years with Avon, her husband joined her. “If you use your family this business grows faster. My husband and I have been working together full-time more than 8 years -- I love it. He does sales. I do leadership.”

Alba also strongly believes in recruitment: “When people call me and ask to place an order, I ask them to join my team and that’s how I grow the business. I don’t mind losing a customer in order to gain a team member. I give opportunities to everybody. I ask every single customer. If they say no, I say, ‘That’s fine, I’ll be here for you.’”

Maria Elena Moran

Next we spoke to Maria Elena Moran, a Representative originally from Guatemala City, Guatemala, who lives and works in Los Angeles, California. “Twenty years ago, I was first introduced to Avon. My husband had become ill and had to stop working, so I saw this as an opportunity to make money for my family. My first order was for 100 dollars and that’s the day I knew I could become someone with Avon and a mother that my husband and kids could be proud of,” explained Maria. “My District Manager and my husband saw my potential. They never doubted me and pushed me to be the best.”

When asked how being an Avon Representative has changed her life, she replied, “I am honored and blessed to be a part of this organization. I was able to pay college tuition for my son, who graduated from University of Berkley, and my daughter from University of Arizona. My other son is still working at his dreams. All these blessing were made possible by working side by side with a company that empowers women to take charge.”

“No matter your circumstance or situation, Avon is a company that supports anyone with the aspiration to grow and be their own boss. It empowers women to feel independent and strong—you’re never alone with Avon. It’s like a family: We are in it together and together we win.”

Maria’s goal and best advice for entrepreneurs is to keep expanding and continue to run a smart and effective business. “I want to grow my business across the United States. I know this is possible and with the new Avon. I feel empowered, once more, like I did 20 years ago. I’m confident that I will reach my goal of becoming Platinum Executive Leader, and train and develop women like I once was.”

Eva Hernandez

We also checked in with Representative Eva Hernandez, originally from Colima, Mexico, who lives in South Gate, California. Eva’s Avon business may have started slowly, but once she committed more time and effort to it, she saw the results and fell in love with Avon. “I started to look for more clients, helpers and asked my family to help me promote my business and this all enabled me to reach Presidents Recognition Program, which was a proud moment. I then started looking for a new challenge, and began to look into Leadership. I realized the importance that Leadership would have, not only have for my business, but also for my community. I saw that a lot of people were in the same situation as I was, and I realized I could help.”

Eva credits her Avon business with helping her become a woman who is a lot more sure of herself, stronger, with a lot more dreams. “My family is often in disbelief of all the great trips, incentive and opportunities that I have earned thus far. I’ve become a business woman, a Leader of Leaders and I love my job—I am not sure a lot of people can say that.”

Eva’s tips for aspiring entrepreneurs? “You have to believe in yourself, you have to be constant, and take advantage of all opportunities that come your way. Sometimes not all things work out, but keep working at it, and learn from those failures. Appreciate your personal growth. I set a yearly goal and start with smaller goals that will help me achieve it. Again, if you don’t achieve the smaller goal – learn, analyze, improve and keep going.”

“I’d love to be able to duplicate myself! There is so much opportunity I’d love to take advantage of. In five years or less, my goal is to reach Silver Executive Leader, and I know it will not be easy but it will be worth it. When I reach my goal, I know that I will have shared my experience and knowledge and, more importantly, changed hundreds of lives, and that is what drives me every day.” With Eva’s positive attitude and work ethic, there’s no doubt she will achieve her goals.
