Women’s History Month: A Time To Recognize, Reflect & Respect

Share

Feb 28, 2023
This month, as we all take the time to celebrate and spotlight iconic women throughout history, look back at how far we’ve come and look forward to all that is possible…at Avon, this is also an opportunity to shine a light on the women who inspire us daily. The everyday heroes that are Avon Representatives. These are women who are building connections with their communities and giving back. They are making bold moves to empower themselves, move toward financial independence, become entrepreneurs and help support their families and loved ones. They are cheering one another on and building each other up. The result? A force to be reckoned with...women who are unstoppable!

Throughout our history, we've aimed to do our part to encourage and drive what's most important to all those who make up our Avon family. And this is just the beginning!

In 1886...
Mrs. P.F.E. Albee, a 50-year-old wife and mother of two, accepted Avon founder David H. McConnell’s offer to become the first "Avon Lady" (or "Representative" more commonly used today). They developed a business model of a women-only network (women selling directly to other women)—pioneering an industry now known as direct selling. Mrs. Albee trained more than 5,000 Representatives and also helped create one of the company’s first fragrance collections. During this time, only 20% of women were working outside of the home, and it was 34 years before women even gained the right to vote.

Decades later...
With the backing of Representatives, Avon helped support the nation during and after WW2, awarding nurses for their service, assisting the Red Cross in making first aid kits for soldiers overseas and contributing to the nation's economic recovery.

Today...
Together; Avon, Avon Representatives and the entire Avon community continue to contribute to causes and organizations that are passionate about issues affecting women. Since 1992, Avon has contributed more than $800 million to breast cancer causes, and in 2018, Avon served as the national presenting sponsor for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer initiative. We have also partnered with Feed the Children, an organization that works to improve nutrition, hygiene and education in vulnerable communities around the world; and more recently with Gyrl Wonder, to support their mission of social impact and career development in the lives of young women of color.

And for over 135 years…
A woman’s freedom to earn and learn on her own terms. Flexibility, work-life balance and opportunity for all…these are all guiding principles that have made us who we are and driven us to do what we do.

At our very core, we are a business inspired by women and how they can make a beautiful impact in the world—today and every day. So thank you to the countless Avon Representatives who have also made a beautiful impact on us.

Women are our history and our future.
