Blogger Spotlight on Grasie Mercedes

Blogger Spotlight on Grasie Mercedes

Style blogger, Grasie Mercedes, shares her Boss Life story and tells us how she got her start in the industry

What does living the Boss Life mean to you?

Having a life and career that makes you happy no matter what!

How did you get started as a blogger?

I was a freelance stylist and TV host for a few years and a hosting agent suggested I focus on fashion so that I was seen as an “expert” in the field. I started the blog then as a place for fashion inspiration posting mostly lookbooks and campaigns. It wasn’t until a couple years later that I started doing personal style OOTD posts and named my blog STYLE ME GRASIE.

What made you want to live the Boss Life?

I was working as a producer at MTV in NY and though it was a really fun job, I wasn’t happy doing it. I knew there was something else for me. I moved to LA to pursue acting, fell into styling which lead to starting my blog. Now I’m a full-time actress with a personal style blog and I love every second of it.

What has been the most empowering moment of your career as a blogger?

Three years ago when I started making a liveable income from blogging. Each year, my blogging income has increased and each year I’m really proud of that!

Where do you hope to take your brand in the next two years?

I want to grow my readership and following and continue to collaborate with brands I love. My main focus is expanding my acting career and growing my brand.

How important to you is female empowerment and supporting fellow women in business?

Super important! Now, more than ever it’s important that women support one another especially women of color. It will only benefit us all if we’re supportive and encouraging.

What's it like working with a brand like Avon, who has empowered women to live the Boss Life for decades?

It’s amazing! My mom used Avon growing up and still does! I remember Avon being my first introduction to makeup as a little girl and most recently I’ve loved trying out their new products. To be working with them as an adult is incredible.

What advice do you have for young women who want a career as a blogger or how they can live their best Boss Life?

Just go for it. Know that it takes a lot of hard work and is not as glamorous as it seems but it’s a fun job and a great way to be your own boss and have your own voice. Also know that it is a very saturated market now and the only way to stand out is to be your truly authentic self! There is only ONE YOU and that’s what people want to see and connect with...YOU!

What has been your biggest struggle as you've built your brand?

The balance between having a personal life and sharing all of me on social media. It’s my job to post about my life on Instagram and Snapchat etc. but sometimes I need to unplug and choose to keep moments to myself. It’s hard because I think “Oh I bet my readers/viewers would like to see this...” but then I think, I just want this moment for myself.

What has been your favourite "Boss Life" moment since launching your blog?

Traveling to Belgium and the island of Mauritius, Africa in the same week with an iconic jewellery brand! It was a crazy fast and memorable experience.

What is your Beauty Boss Tip?

I have two: NEVER go to bed with makeup on and remember to moisturize and a great red lipstick will always make you look on point!
