Celebrating Our Small Business Community
Whether they’ve built a team or they’re flying solo, every Avon Representative is a small business owner. Each of them has shaped their business from the start and has put in the hard work to achieve success and make life beautiful in their local communities. In celebration of Small Business Saturday 2020, we asked new and experienced Representatives to share their small business stories. Their incredible responses demonstrate just how big of an impact a small business can have. We’re sharing a few inspiring stories that showcase the very best qualities of small business owners—especially the amazing individuals who make up the Avon family.
They love what they do. Our community is filled with beauty lovers who put their passion to work. Avon Representative Lori McMasters recalls getting excited every time the ‘Avon Lady’ would come over when she was a child. “My mom always let me pick out one item just for me. It meant the world to me. Now that I am older and selling Avon, I feel honored to be the lady that gets people excited when I show up at their door,” she says. Not only is this personal connection special to Lori, but it also inspires other women to reach for the top in work and life. “I am proud to be in a business that supports independent women and gives them the opportunity to achieve their life goals. I am so excited to grow my Avon business and to reach as many people as possible,” she notes.
Avon Representative Amy Perham expresses a similar feeling. “I love sharing the products that I love with my friends, coworkers, and loved ones. It is especially exciting to me that my granddaughter wants to be a Representative as soon as she’s old enough!” Through Avon, Amy has had the opportunity to step out of her comfort zone and make connections with amazing new people. She is also especially proud to be a part of Avon because of our efforts raising awareness for both breast cancer and domestic violence. “I love being part of a business that supports causes that are of personal importance to me,” she says.
They rise to the challenge. Avon Representative Samara Holton decided to join Avon on a whim and found it challenging at first. She was ready to quit before she even started, but decided to keep going. She took time to learn the ins and outs of the business and moved at her own pace. “The more I learned, the more excited I became…I am so glad I didn’t give up.” Small businesses require grit and determination, and our community members persevere.
They adapt and succeed. Many Representatives start their businesses to help handle new, and sometimes unexpected circumstances. Since the pandemic has made it difficult for so many to find work, go-getters like Avon Representative Irene Lewis have had to change course professionally. “Once COVID hit, I was unable to work,” Irene says. “Worried about my income…I joined Avon and I am so glad I did!” It’s kept her busy and helped her pay her bills.
Others like Kandi Kinkaid, a Crohn’s disease warrior, decided to sell Avon in the hopes of growing a business successful enough that would allow her to leave her part-time office job. She wanted to be her own boss and not have to worry about missing work due to her illness. “Long story short,” she explains, “I worked hard and proved that I could do it! I left my part-time job within four months of joining Avon.” Kandi is coming up on her three-year anniversary with Avon, and she’s built up her business so much —and she does it on her own schedule!
This year, we’ve all seen firsthand the importance of small businesses in our communities. We rely heavily on local individuals to provide the services we need and love. And of course, our support helps these small businesses stay up and running. We’re so proud of our Avon community and delighted to support Representatives in their small business journeys, today and every day.
