“Do good things to make good things happen,” says Avon Representative Tim Brown, who started selling Avon with his dad (!) at age 15 to pay for his first car (a Pontiac Grand Am). Another thing you need to know about Brown — he’s a full-time optometrist and Avon is his side-gig. EVY: Tell me about your journey.
TIM: I started selling Avon at the age of 15 to earn extra income to buy my own car, to be able to own car insurance and take care of some of the things that I needed during high school so that my parents wouldn’t have to. I asked my dad if I could take some of his products and take them to sell after school and with that money I was able to buy a Pontiac Grand Am that I’m proud of.
EVY: Where did your entrepreneurial spirit come from?
TIM: My parents were very supportive about teaching us and showing us that you can have anything you want in life, but you have to work for it. My parents would have us participate in fundraisers at school and at church selling Krispy Kreme donuts. We were helping organizations help raise funds for a cause. That’s what got me excited.
EVY: How do you balance being an optometrist and your Avon business? Any advice?
TIM: I believe work-life balance is a must. If you want to do it and be successful, the number one thing is to have a positive mindset. You can balance two jobs with family, but stay committed and put things on a calendar so you can stay organized.
EVY: What are some lessons that you want to pass down to your children?
TIM: I love teaching them about entrepreneurship, financial freedom and I take them with me so they can see what happens when Dad leaves home to work on his Avon business. I want them to understand that they have options in life.
EVY: How does it feel to be a male beauty boss?
TIM: It’s a great feeling when you wake up each day knowing that you have daily opportunities to positively impact lives around the globe mentoring, speaking, recognizing team members and helping people make positive lifestyle changes.
