“Know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em,” says Avon Representative Lydia Osolinsky of quitting her PhD program to join Avon. “Think about what’s really important and let the little things go.” Click HERE to listen to the whole episode and read her top tips, shared with host Evy DeAngelis, below!
EVY: What made you follow in your mom’s footsteps?
LYDIA: My mom quit her job to become an Avon Representative because she had this amazing vision that she could see that the opportunity was there and that if she put her all into it she could build something incredible and she really has. My dad quit his job to help her because she was so successful and they supported the whole family all on Avon. They put my brother and I through college with no student loans — all on Avon. Who can say they have no student loans?
EVY: Tell us about your journey.
LYDIA: I was five years deep into a PhD program studying to be a university professor; I was studying women’s issues and wanted to make a difference in women’s lives. But, I found that my day-to-day was stifling and lonely. I looked at my mom and saw that she was helping women build lives to support themselves and their passions. She was making a difference. And then I had my daughter, who was born 13 weeks premature and we spent 85 days in the hospital. Because of my mom’s Avon business, she was able to come and sit with me and the business was still there. We had so much to worry about, but finance was not one of them. This made me reevaluate what was important.
EVY: How do you balance motherhood and your career?
LYDIA: Multitasking is a big part of it. I do as much as I can when the girls are with me — I do video calls, etc. There’s only so much that you can control. I find that many of the people that I talk to, they relax when they hear my girls in the background because for the most part, they’re hiding their kids in the background, too! We are able to connect on a deeper level.
EVY: What’s the most rewarding thing for you about Avon?
LYDIA: It’s rewarding to have my girls there with me and have a life where I’m in control. It’s been really exciting and fun and incredibly rewarding to be able to try new things with the business. Because Avon is so flexible and you can be the boss, you can really be resourceful. I’m getting to do things through my business that I never really imagined doing.
