As we celebrate our anniversary and 135 years of beauty, we honor our founder David H. McConnell – a pioneer, a visionary and a champion of empowering women through economic opportunity. And his mission is as relevant today as it was in 1886. From the first bottle sold by the California Perfume Company 135 years ago to the newest super-trending makeup and skin care, take a look at the Avon story and how we continue to make life beautiful.
From Door-To-Door To Digital
Avon's direct selling system was developed by Mrs. P.F.E. Albee, our first Representative, in 1886. It was the first of its kind. As Mrs. Albee sold perfumes door-to-door, she recruited a team of saleswomen. Direct selling offered women a chance to work outside the home in an era when they had few opportunities to do so. Avon's first catalog appeared in 1896 with no illustrations. The first full-color catalog was issued in 1905. Avon was also early, relative to most competitors, to launch an e-commerce site in 1996. Our latest tech tools include the Digital Catalog - a revolutionary way to shop with our try-it-on technology and shade finder tool. Try it now! And Representatives enjoy Studio 1886, their very own business center and state-of-the-art office - a new space to work and play in an elevated beauty experience.
